As I understand it, Hollywood is taking yet another stab at the character, and trying for a still darker approach. We played the accordion, sometimes spoons and whistles. Bielski and the people he protected were desperate for provisions, and the local peasants often suffered raids from his scouting parties, even though they were poor and struggling themselves. Overall, I went in with very high expectations and hopes, and did not feel like this book delivered. At one level the book fails.

We are often tempted to dismiss critiques leveled against them, afraid that the good they achieved will be overlooked. We all grow up with a certain number of romantic ideals and role models, and as we grow older, discouragement can easily shake the high regard in which we hold them. Tuvia Bielski bore his share of faults and missteps, both on a personal level, and in his capacity as a leader.
Though not interested in giving some poor geek a revitalization of partjsans superhero or folk legend, she was very clearly interested in the idea of heroism. You really get a sense of these people's lives in the forest and I found it absolutely fascinating! Oftentimes, Tec digresses to tell the histories of Otriad members or those that didn't make it. To those that know me, the fact that I picked up something historical at all will probably surprise them. Still, an interesting account of a community fighting for survival and many of them succeeding - a light in the otherwise darkness of Europe.

Despite this, the book is very good. Before this I'd only read from the viewpoint of soldiers on the front line, germans fighting inside of Hitler's Third Reich, and from the viewpoint of Jews destined for the concentration camps. At the beginning of the book, I felt like the author assumed I knew more than I actually did and it made the first several pages difficult for me to get through.

Though the movie based on it was good enough for Daniel Craig The Bond to be a part of it, it was nowhere as good as the book. This one was hard to read but every ounce of energy I had put into reading the book was reciprocated back with interest. Very interesting to compare to others who stood up to the Nazi's, such as Sophie Scholl, Corrie Ten Boom, etc who didn't compromise their morals. We know that the world is different from the one we grew up believing in, but our idealism and romanticism are stubborn.

The story is a fascinating one which deserves to be better known. Impressive work by Nechama Tec-I learned a lot. This is one of my favourite quotes because I think it shows what a good leader Tuvia was. The story of Robin Bielski of Locksley Belarus is every bit as moving and insightful as I could have hoped.
The reader never really gets a sense of knowing any of the Bielski brothers. Be the first one to write a review. The group was on the move a lot, had to deal with conflict from within and eventually had to answer to leaders of Russian partisan groups.
Given the political and logistical challenges Bielski faced, it was a truly remarkable feat. How frequent were attacks on the partisans by Germans? This was a difficult book to read.
